A vehicle owned by Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Traffic Karachi Peer Mohammad Shah was issued an E-ticket as the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
The incident took place near Lyari Interchange in Karachi.
The DIG said, “I was present at the time of the challan.” The challan worth Rs 10,000 was issued to the vehicle’s driver.
Peer Muhammad Shah said that more than 4301 e-challans were issued across the city yesterday.
Later, talking to mediamen, Peer Mohammad Shah said majority of e-challans were issued for not wearing a seatbelt. A traffic official said that 2290 vehicles were challaned for not wearing seat belts, 845 for speeding, and 655 for not wearing helmets.
He explained that fines for motorcycles can go up to Rs5,000, while larger vehicles face penalties of up to Rs20,000. In certain cases, the amount can even reach Rs100,000.
The DIG announced a strict campaign against vehicles with missing or fake number plates, saying that FIRs will be filed against such vehicles. “A vehicle will not be released until its number plate is verified or updated,” he warned.
Shah emphasized that it is the seller’s responsibility to complete all legal formalities when selling a vehicle.
Those who have already sold their vehicles have been advised to contact the Excise Department and provide a copy of their CNIC so that records can be updated in the system.
MQM MPA submits adjournment motion
Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) lawmaker Engineer Adil Askari submitted an adjournment motion in the Sindh Assembly against E-Challan system in Karachi.
In his adjournment motion, Engineer Adil Askari stated that the Sindh government introduced E-Challan without ensuring road safety and basic traffic measures.
He said that people of Karachi are facing difficulties due to the poor condition of its roads.
He said non-operational traffic signals, poor condition of roads, Zabra crossing, low number of signboards make it impossible for drivers and pedestrians to follow traffic rules.
Encroachments by mafias and illegal squatters have further obstructed the flow of traffic by narrowing the roads.
He further stated that under these circumstances, imposing e-challans on citizens is unfair, premature, and harmful.
Instead of ensuring road infrastructure, citizens are being punished under a flawed and unfair system.
The adjournment motion demands that the reverse electronic challan system be suspended until the infrastructure is improved.
A comprehensive plan should be launched to repair roads, install signals, and remove encroachments.
