Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal said Wednesday that the opposition was bitterly opposed to constitutional amendment proposed to hold Senate elections through a show of hands, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Speaking in the National Assembly (NA), he vowed that the opposition would not allow the government to bulldoze the constitution. “Opposition members in the Senate outnumber those belonging to the ruling PTI,” he reminded.

The MNA was of the view that the government had still not come out of D-Chowk container mentality.

He threatened the government with agitation if the opposition was not allowed to speak its mind on the issues confronting the country. “Members of the opposition, in the past, used to speak for hours, but now the situation is different,” he deplored.

Ahsan said people were in pain because of the increase in petrol prices for the fifth time in two months. “The future of students is at stake as these days all universities in the country are facing a worst financial crisis,” he said, and added, “How on earth these universities will impart quality education besides providing research opportunities when they themselves are cash strapped.”

PML-N secretary general said the country’s aviation industry had come crashing down due to minister for aviation’s controversial statement on 250 Pakistani pilots with fake licences.

He demanded golden handshake for Pakistan Steel Mills’ ex-employees.

PML-N leader said the opposition would not now tolerate its character assassination. “Prime Minister Imran Khan is accustomed to calling us names,” he said and claimed 90 per cent of the calls made to PM Imran this week were planted.

Ahsan said that number of scandals, including sugar, flour, had been reported ever since PTI came to power, but the government had not moved even by an inch.

He reminded the PTI that the National Assembly was not its property. “In fact, it belongs to the entire nation,” he said and added the government had projected opposition like a genie.

PML-N secretary general claimed that if MNAs were asked to vote for or against Speaker Asad Qaiser, the majority would vote against him.

He said it was unfortunate that opposition leaders like Shehbaz Sharif, Khawaja Asif and Khurshid Shah were in prisons. “Is not it political victimization on the part of the government?” he questioned.

And when Ahsan asked MNAs from the opposition to raise their hands to show their dislike for the speaker, the MNAs shouted ‘No, No, No’.
