Four die as dust storm hits Karachi

At least four people died and 15 others sustained injuries as dust storm hit the Sindh capital Wednesday, 24NewsHD reported.

More fatalities are feared as according to rescuers, strong winds uprooted trees and the storm inflicted heavy damage upon domestic and commercial buildings. The most affected areas are Janjal Goth, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and University Road.

Up to kilometres per hour, the storm hit the Sindh capital, the Met Office said, adding that bad weather is likely to stay.

This is the first wave, the Met Office said adding that more are likely. Power outages in Lyari, Malir, New Karachi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Korangi were also reposted .

According to a press release, the Met Office forecast rains in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa (KP) and Azad Kashmir, whereas showers were expected in some places of Sindh and East Balochistan.

"With intermittent rainfall, thunderstorm and blowing winds, other parts of the country to witness the downpours include Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, Attock, Mianwali, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Layyah, Khushab and Mandi Bahauddin."

On Tuesday the Met Office released an alert especially for fishermen to stay away from venture in deep sea, although the deep depression was at a distance of about 1500km south east of Karachi. Last week, the Meteorological Department predicted rainfall and dust storms across the country.
