An 8-year-old Chinese boy has woken from a 55-day coma after a serious car accident — a recovery that has drawn widespread attention online after videos of him responding to familiar voices were shared by classmates and family.
According to a media report, Liu Chuxi, from Hunan province, slipped into a coma after suffering severe brain trauma and lung injuries in a traffic accident in November 2025.
Doctors initially warned his family that the chances of him regaining consciousness were extremely low.
Despite the grim prognosis, Liu’s mother refused to give up and sought treatment at several hospitals in hopes of finding a way to stimulate her son’s recovery.
One doctor suggested that familiar sounds or a child’s favourite music could help activate specific areas of the brain and potentially trigger a response.
Acting on the advice, Liu’s mother compiled music regularly played at his school and played it daily at his bedside.
At the same time, Liu’s teacher gathered his classmates and recorded short but emotional video messages for him.
In one clip, a boy urged Liu to wake up so they could play football together, while a girl told him how much he was missed and asked him to open his eyes if he could hear their voices.
The videos were played repeatedly, and after 45 days in a coma, Liu began showing slight movement in his eyelids, the report said.
Days later, he smiled upon hearing his teacher’s voice, and on the 55th day, he regained full consciousness and was able to move his left hand.
Liu’s teacher and classmates later visited him at the hospital, bringing gifts to celebrate his recovery.
Describing the moment as life-changing, Liu’s mother said the family had finally seen “the sun emerge from behind the clouds,” calling her son’s awakening nothing short of a miracle.
Doctors said Liu’s condition has since continued to improve, and he is now recovering rapidly.
