An Afghan national, who arrived in the UK in a lorry, appeared in court on Thursday charged with murder after a stabbing attack which left one dead and two injured.

Safi Dawood, 22, is accused of murdering Wayne Broadhurst, 49, who was walking his dog in the west London suburb of Uxbridge on Monday when the alleged stabbing spree took place.

He is also charged with the attempted murder of two others, including a 14-year-old boy.

The UK government has confirmed the suspect arrived in Britain in a lorry in 2020 and was granted asylum and allowed to remain in the country in 2022 legally.

Dawood appeared at London's Westminster Magistrate's Court wearing a grey T-shirt and trousers, and sat hunched over during the hearing, according to the PA news agency.

Police ruled out terrorism early in the case, and have said that Dawood, who lived in the neighbourhood where the incident took place, knew the two injured victims but not the man who was killed.

The injured 45-year-old man remains in hospital with "life-changing injuries", police said, while the boy was discharged.

Dawood is to appear in London's Central Criminal Court in the next 48 hours.
