Pakistan and Armenia are set to establish formal diplomatic relations in the coming weeks, marking what diplomatic sources describe as a “major turning point” in the foreign policy of both countries.
The first official meeting between the foreign ministers of the two states is expected within hours on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of State Council meeting in Tianjin.
Pakistan will be represented by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, while the Armenian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Ararat Marzvan, diplomatic sources confirmed.
Both countries have expressed determination and positivity in moving forward on a fast track towards establishing diplomatic ties.
According to sources, Pakistan has taken Azerbaijan and Turkey into special confidence before advancing talks with Armenia, while Russia and Iran have also been consulted.
The development follows the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which has paved the way for improved relations across the region.
Pakistan, which has historically supported Azerbaijan, is now progressing toward establishing diplomatic ties with Armenia after consultations with Baku, sources added.
