Pakistan has repaid Rs 2.6 trillion ($9.3 billion) in domestic loans ahead of schedule, marking an unprecedented move in the country’s financial history, a senior finance official said Friday.
According to Khurram Shahzad, Adviser to the Federal Finance Minister, the government cleared Rs 1.63 trillion owed to the State Bank of Pakistan within just 59 days, including Rs 500 billion on June 30 and Rs 1.13 trillion on Aug. 29.
In addition, the Ministry of Finance retired Rs 1 trillion in commercial market borrowings during the first half of FY25.
“This is the first time Pakistan has executed such large-scale early repayments to both the central bank and commercial lenders,” Shahzad said, calling it a “record-breaking milestone” in debt management.
