Water level started rising at Head Marala Barrage in Chenab River in the Sialkot District of Punjab on Sunday evening, 24NewsHD TV reported.
According to the report, water inflow in Chenab reached 116,000 cusecs on Sunday evening and there were fears of a major flood from September 1 to 3. Keeping in view the prevailing situation, rescue services have been put on high alert in Sialkot district.
On Sunday, Sialkot border area Bajwat remained cut off from the mainland for the fifth consecutive day. Rise in water levels in Chenab will create more problems for 85 villages of Bajwat where rescue operation is already under way.
Also on Sunday, rescue operations continued in Pasrur, Kaluwali, Ban Bajwa and surrounding areas. Rescuers are actively working in Kot Dasu, Dharam Kot, Pir Kahu and other areas of Daska. Rescue 1122 personnel shifted 1,746 people to safer places.
At least 19 people were killed when they were swept away by floodwater. Their bodies have been retrieved and handed over to their families.
District Emergency Officer Engineer Naveed Iqbal said that rescue sectors would remain active until the situation returns to normal.
