Of the 76 cases taken up for hearing by the consumer courts in Karachi in 2020, 58 are still pending, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.
Coronavirus pandemic and petitioners’ absence were the main reasons which led to the backlog, says the channel.
The highest number of cases, 45, was referred to the consumer court in the District South of the provincial capital. Out of these 45 cases, decisions in only two have been pronounced while 10 cases were thrown out by the court since the petitioners either failed to give evidence or did not attend the hearings.
District South is followed by District East where 18 cases were filed in the consumer court in 2020. Out of these 18 cases, verdicts in only two were pronounced while 10 cases were thrown out by the courts.
In Korangi’s consumer court, only two cases were filed in the entire year; decisions in both of which are awaited.
Similarly, out of three cases filed in the consumer court of District Malir, one was thrown out while decisions in two others are awaited.
Likewise, five cases were filed in the consumer court of District Central of Karachi in 2020, out of which two were thrown out by the court while three others are still to be settled.
