Iran executed on Tuesday two more members of a banned opposition group, a day after hanging two other men convicted in the same case, as activists warn Tehran is intensifying the use of capital punishment.
The judiciary's Mizan Online website said Babak Alipour and Pouya Ghobadi were hanged on charges of rebellion over membership of the banned People's Mujahedin of Iran (MEK) after their sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court.
The MEK's political wing, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), said in a statement that Alipour, 34, and Ghobadi, 33, were both members of the MEK and were hanged at dawn in the notorious Ghezel Hesar prison in Karaj outside Tehran.
They had both been arrested in early 2024, the NCRI said.
A day earlier, their fellow MEK members Akbar Daneshvarkar and Mohammad Taghavi-Sangdehi were hanged in the same case.
Two other men, Abolhassan Montazeri and Vahid Bani-Amerian, were also sentenced to death in the same case in December 2024 and are at risk of imminent execution.
"Babak, Pouya, Mohammad, and Akbar are the proud teachers of truth and sacrifice in our time, and their names will remain in the history of Iran forever," said NCRI leader Maryam Rajavi.
The MEK opposed the rule of the shah and initially supported the 1979 Islamic revolution, but rapidly fell out with the new clerical leadership in the 1980s.
It is now based in exile and is designated as a terrorist organisation by Tehran, which accuses it of attacks against state institutions and officials.
The executions come with Iran at war with the United States and Israel following strikes on February 28 that triggered a wider regional conflict.
"We are facing a very real and imminent risk of mass executions of political prisoners," said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR), which closely tracks the death penalty in Iran.
Iran is the world's most prolific executioner after China, according to rights groups.
Iran on March 19 executed three men who were accused of killing police officers during protests in January, the first hangings Iran has carried out related to the nationwide demonstrations that were met with a brutal crackdown by authorities.
It also executed Kouroush Keyvani, a dual Iranian-Swedish national, in the same month on charges of spying for Israel, drawing condemnation from Stockholm and the EU.
