In a shocking twist, police have arrested a man who allegedly demanded Rs10 million in extortion from a citizen living abroad, only to discover that the accused was a close relative of the victim.

According to SSP Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Amjad Ahmed Sheikh, the arrest was made during a joint operation by the SIU and the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) in the Sachal area of Karachi. The accused was identified as Ahsan Farooqi.

Sheikh said the case was initially registered at the Sachal Police Station on October 15, after which the investigation was transferred to the SIU’s Crime Investigation Agency. Using technical assistance and coordination with the CPLC, the SIU team traced and arrested the suspect.

Police recovered weapons, bullets, and the mobile phone used to contact the complainant from the accused’s possession. The accused had allegedly contacted citizen Bilal, who resides in Kuwait with his family, through WhatsApp, issuing serious threats to harm his siblings if the extortion demand was not met.

Investigations revealed that the suspect planned to extort and rob his own relative for financial gain. “It is a clear case of betrayal within the family,” said SSP Sheikh.

A new case has been registered against the arrested accused at the SIU police station, while further interrogation is underway, officials confirmed.
