The Punjab government has unveiled an extensive plan dubbed the “Digital Fence of Peace” aimed at cracking down on hate speech, sedition, and misuse of loudspeakers across the province.
The decision was made during the seventh consecutive high-level law and order meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, where a new roadmap for maintaining peace and religious harmony was approved.
According to the provincial government, the “microphone of hatred, provocation, and mischief” has been shut forever in Punjab. No individual, political party, or organisation will be allowed to use loudspeakers for any purpose other than the five daily calls to prayer and Friday sermons, which remain exempt from restrictions.
The Loudspeaker Act will now be strictly implemented and monitored through CCTV cameras and advanced digital technology. Special units have also been activated to track and take action against hate content and incitement on social media, with violators facing prosecution under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to take strong and immediate measures against elements spreading hatred or supporting illegally residing foreigners, saying such individuals were now under the strict grip of the Punjab government.
The meeting also reviewed steps for the welfare of more than 65,000 imams across Punjab. Maryam Nawaz instructed that the registration and payment of imams’ salaries be completed transparently, supported by digital mapping of all mosques in the province.
The chief minister announced a comprehensive plan to restore and beautify mosques, ensure missing facilities are provided, and improve surrounding infrastructure, including road clearance and drainage systems.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that religious parties are free to carry out their activities within the code of conduct, assuring that the government would fully support groups promoting religious harmony and peace.
Meanwhile, the provincial administration has warned that those possessing or concealing illegal weapons will face strict legal action, and severe penalties will be imposed on individuals aiding or sheltering foreigners staying illegally in Punjab.
