Jamaat-i-Islami has demanded holding of the fresh census in Karachi as per the United Nations standards, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Jamaat-i-Islami on Thursday filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking fresh population count in the megacity in accordance with the set UN standards and also urged the apex court to declare unconstitutional the General Statistics Act 2011.

The petition prayed that protecting people’s fundamental rights is the responsibility of the Supreme Court. It said the people of Karachi pay most taxes but it still is being treated with discrimination.

“The basic rights are being usurped by showing a low population of Karachi,” it added.

The petition was filed by Jamaat-i-Islami’s Karachi President Hafiz Naeemur Rehman. Federation, Sindh government, Federal Planning Ministry and Bureau of Statistics were made respondents.
