Flying Foxes or Fruit Bats, a rare species of two to three-feet tall and ugly-faced bats, have instilled terror in the hearts of people as they have been attacking banana, mango and dates’ orchards in different parts of Nawabshah causing colossal loss to the trees, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.

Despite the fact that the breed is already rare and pesticides have also been sprayed to keep them at bay, still they continue to grow in numbers. The animals have even started attacking children, spreading fear and panic in the people.

Although police have managed to kill 500 of them, but later it stopped the operation. The result is that they are now everywhere: in Rohri Canal, Jamal Shah, Qazi Ahmed and Athar Mori.

The police operation invited the wrath of Sindh Wildlife Department.

Deputy Commissioner Shaheed Benazirabad Ibrar Ahmed Jafar has said that although the wildlife department had lashed out at the police for eliminating the bats, still it did nothing on its own to rein in the unbridled animals.

Locals have demanded the government not only to eliminate bats from their areas but to also compensate them for their losses.
