Princess Charlene of Monaco tests positive for Covid-19

Unfortunate news for fans of the Monegasque royal family — while Princess Charlene had finally made a return to public appearances in the last few weeks, it looks like she will be taking some time away from her royal duties once more.

The princess tested positive for Covid-19 this weekend, according to a statement released to People by the palace. Per the statement, Charlene was "presenting some symptoms has tested positive" through a screening test. The palace also stated that, "Complying with the health rules in force, Princess Charlene will observe a period of isolation of several days."

Charlene isn't the first of Monaco's royal family to test positive since the start of the pandemic—her husband, Prince Albert, tested positive for the virus in March of 2020, and for a second time this April. On both occasions, neither Charlene nor the couple's twin children, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, were reported to have contracted COVID-19.

The news understandably raised concern for many about the princess's well-being—she was absent from the public eye for over a year after a prolonged ENT issue left her grounded in South Africa for six months, followed by a four-month stint at a Swiss clinic to recover from exhaustion. However, the palace has assured that, "the state of her health is not a source of concern."

Charlene had only recently begun to return to public duties, appearing at several of Monaco's biggest events throughout May, including Monte-Carlo Fashion Week and the Grand Prix. It is not currently clear when she might resume royal appearances.
