The Sri Lankan team could not win the second ODI against South Africa on Saturday but captain Dasun Shanaka had a "surprise gift" at the hotel just minutes after his arrival from the Stadium.

"It is his first wedding anniversary on Sunday and when the team arrived just after the mid-night, we presented him with a wedding cake", one of the hotel staff, speaking exclusively over the telephone from Colombo, said.

Dasun Shanaka had married to his long-time girlfriend Chewanthi (daughter of Mrs. and Mr. Krishnatha Perera) at the Royal Banquet Averna Garden, Negombo. on September 5 last year.

The couple were to marry a few months ago but the marriage was postponed because of the COVID-19.

Chevanthi and Isika Jayasekera Lokuge (wife of Dinesh Chandimal) witnessed both the matches from the special enclosure at the ground. The team's bowling coach Chaminda Vaas' wife has also joined the team hotel but she has preferred to remain in the hotel.

"Obviously, our captain and his wife were surprised with the wedding cake. One of our hotel staff had remembered this date and our Food and Beverages (F&B) department was quick to make a special cake for them", the source added.

The 1st anniversary cake had strawberries and roses and chocolate pieces on it and the message "Love Is Sweet" was mentioned.
