Pakistan’s single-day coronavirus death toll shoots up to 95

The single-day death toll from coronavirus has shot up to 95 in Pakistan during the last 24 hours (Friday), showed the statistics released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Saturday morning.

As per the NCOC figures, after the addition of 95 new deaths the overall toll has now surged to 23,797 whereas the number of total infections now stood at 1,063,125 after adding the fresh 4,720.

During the last 24 hours, a total of 57,233 tests were conducted throughout Pakistan whereas the positivity ratio stood at 8.24 percent.

During the last 24 hours (Friday), as many as 4,780 patients have recovered from the virus whereas the total recoveries stood at 959,491. As of Saturday, the total count of active cases in the country was recorded at 79,837.

As many as 396,918 coronavirus cases have so far been confirmed in Sindh, 362,557 in Punjab, 147,452 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 90,093 in Islamabad, 31,069 in Balochistan, 26,421 in Azad Kashmir and 8,615 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Moreover, 11,172 individuals have lost their lives to the pandemic in Punjab so far, 6,168 in Sindh, 4,524 in KP, 811 in Islamabad, 641 in Azad Kashmir, 331 in Balochistan, and 150 in Gilgit Baltistan.

Students vaccination

In another tweet, the NCOC has made it clear that the vaccination is open to all above 18 years of age.

It, however, said that the students aged 16-18 years, who wanted to travel abroad for studies requiring mandatory vaccination will be administered Moderna vaccine (after checking valid visa/university documents).

- Half of Americans jabbed -
Half of the US population is now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, the White House says, as inoculations rise in response to the surging Delta variant of the coronavirus.

"50 percent of Americans (all ages) are now fully vaccinated. Keep going!," says Cyrus Shahpar, White House Covid-19 data director in a tweet.

- Italy health pass -
New rules requiring a green pass providing proof of a Covid-19 vaccine, previous infection or a negative coronavirus test come into force for museums and indoor dining in Italy, catching out many tourists.

- Manila lockdown -
The Philippine capital Manila returns to lockdown as authorities seek to slow the spread of the Delta variant and ease pressure on hospitals while trying to avoid crushing economic activity.

- Sri Lanka tightens restrictions -
Sri Lanka bans state ceremonies and public gatherings until September 1, after the number of coronavirus deaths and infections in the last week doubled from a month ago.

- US jobs figures -
President Joe Biden hails strong US job creation numbers -- 943,000 new jobs added last month -- as evidence that his drive to resurrect the economy from the ravages of the pandemic is yielding results.

- ...And Canada -
The Canadian economy created 94,000 jobs in July and the unemployment rate fell to 7.5 percent as Covid-19 restrictions were eased, after peaking at 9.4 percent in January, Statistics Canada reports.

- Over 4.2 million dead -
The coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 4,268,017 people worldwide since the virus first emerged in late 2019, according to an AFP compilation of official data. 

The US is the worst-affected country with 615,320 deaths, followed by Brazil with 560,706, India with 426,754, Mexico with 243,165 and Peru with 196,760.
