Pakistan’s first coronavirus patient in Sindh has fully recovered, government officials told the media on Friday.

The patient, who is a young student from a town on the outskirts of Karachi, would be discharged from hospital on Saturday as his lab tests for the coronavirus have come out negative, officials said.

The patient was being treated in isolation for the last 10 days and he was tested three times during this time period. His third test was done Friday morning and it came out negative. As a result, doctors declared him fit to go home, an official said.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who was informed about the development at a meeting with the coronavirus task force in Karachi, congratulated the family of the patient and called it a great victory.

The young patient was believed to have contracted the virus in the Iranian holy city of Qum. He was diagnosed positive on February 26 and subsequently shifted to the isolation ward of a private hospital. He had travelled to the Islamic Republic in a group of 28 pilgrims.

The family of the patient –his father, mother and sister – were immediately placed in quarantine, but were discharged after their lab tests for the coronavirus came out negative.

Of the remaining two patients in Sindh, officials said one is recovering fast and the other is in a stable condition. Health authorities have advised the media against identifying the patients or sharing their personal details.

As of Saturday, Pakistan has six confirmed cases of coronavirus.
