The government is in action to place the name of former Gilgit-Baltistan chief justice Rana Shamim on the Exit Control List, 24NewsHD TV reported on Tuesday.

According to sources, the prime minister directed the law minister to put his name on ECL at the earliest and the cabinet committee is meeting for the purpose today.

Rana Shamim's name will be placed on on the ECL in two or three days, the insiders said, adding that he has already been blacklisted.

The sources added Advocate General Niazullah Khan Niazi wrote to the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) chief commissioner for placing the ex-judge’s name on ECL.

“Rana Muhammad Shamim is facing contempt proceedings before the Honorable Islamabad High Court in Criminal Original No.309/2021 and has been served with show cause Notice No1628 dated 19.11.2021 in the same proceedings,” read the letter.

Apprehending that former chief justice Gilgit-Baltistan might flee abroad, the letter said, “Should he flee the country, serious prejudice may be caused to the ongoing proceedings and in effect to the rule of law and independence of judiciary.”
