Professor of Peace and Conflict Research Ashok Swain on Friday revealed the matrimonial data of Hindu, Muslim and Christian people who have more than one wife in India.

According to the 24News HD TV channel, Ashok Swain in his tweet responded to Himanta Sarma’s comment over the criticism against Muslims’ right to have 3 to 4 wives.

Himanta Sarma has said, “Muslim Men Can’t Have 3-4 Wives, Want to Change System”, and such a comment has also been trolled by an Indian news channel in its tweet.

Responding to this comment, Indian Professor Ashok described with facts and figures that Hindus have also more than one wife in India despite the religious prohibition in Hinduism that no one Hindu can keep more than one spouse at the same time.

In the Hindu religion, a Hindu believer cannot marry more than one person legally. He or she cannot keep more than one spouse at the same time. While a Hindu is married to another person, he or she cannot marry another person. If he or she does so, then the second marriage will be considered illegal.

Anyhow, Professor Ashok Swain in his tweet exposed, “India's 1.9% of Muslims have more than one wife, but 1.3% of Hindus and 2.1% of Christians also have more than one wife. In states like Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, more Hindus (percent wise) have more than one wife than Muslims.”
