Bill to regulate social media gets PM’s nod

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the amendment to the PICA Act 2016 to regulate social media, 24NewsHD TV channel reported.

The proposed bill will be tabled in Parliament after Cabinet approval.

It has been decided to create a Digital Rights Protection Authority under the PICA Act Amendment Bill.

The Legal Reforms Committee of the Cabinet recommended the proposed bill.

The authority will be under the IT ministry and it will advise the government on matters related to digital rights.

It will ensure responsible use of the Internet and compliance with regulations. It will regulate online content and dig into violations of the law on social media.

The authority will take action against violators of the new PICA law and be able to summon the persons involved in violation of laws and witnesses,

It will also able to make rules to implement digital rights laws.

It will create a safe and trustworthy digital environment by promoting user safety and protecting fundamental rights.

Last week, the IT Ministry issued an SRO regarding the creation of a National Cybercrime Investigation Authority
