Israeli army bans android phones for senior officers

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has tightened mobile phone usage rules for senior officers, banning Android devices and requiring all commanders of the rank of lieutenant colonel and above to use Apple iPhones for official communications, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday. 

According to Israeli media, the move aims to reduce potential hacking or cyber-intrusion risks in mobile communications.

By standardizing the operating system for all high-level official phones, the IDF can more easily manage security updates, monitoring, and control measures.

Security authorities have previously warned soldiers about hacking threats, with past incidents showing that militant groups, including Hamas, exploited apps like WhatsApp to extract information from troops stationed along the Gaza border.

The new directive allows Android phones only for personal use, while all official and command-level communication must now be conducted via IDF-managed iPhones.
