London Mayor Sadiq Khan takes seat in House of Lords as Lord Khan of Tooting

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has formally joined the UK Parliament’s House of Lords after being introduced as Lord Khan of Tooting and taking the oath in the upper chamber, reported 24NewsHD TV.

Khan took his seat on Tuesday, September 15, becoming a Labour member of the House of Lords. The official UK Parliament schedule lists his introduction alongside fellow new peer Lord Neri

Sadiq Khan was formally conferred the title of Lord Khan of Tooting, and he also took the oath of office in the House of Lords. His life peerage was recommended by former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in recognition of his public and political service.

During the formal ceremony, Khan took the parliamentary oath of allegiance to King Charles III, officially beginning his membership of the upper chamber.

Sadiq Khan, 55, was born and raised in London, studied law. He served as a councillor in the London Borough of Wandsworth from 1994 to 2006 and was elected as the MP for Tooting in 2005.

He later served as a government minister, including as Minister of State for Transport, before being elected Mayor of London in 2016. He was re-elected in 2021 and again in 2024, and remains the incumbent mayor.

His elevation to the Lords means Khan will now have a role in the UK's upper chamber while continuing to serve as Mayor of London. His current mayoral term runs until 2028.

The new title Lord Khan of Tooting reflects Tooting in south London, the area Khan represented as an MP and where he grew up.
