US Adani probe adds diplomatic pressure on Modi's Indian govt

Amid ongoing trade tensions between the United States and India, American investigations involving the Adani Group have emerged as a fresh diplomatic challenge for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to international media reports.

According to the24NewsHD TV channel, the case has raised questions not only about India’s governance framework but also about the country’s credibility at the global level, the reports said.

International media outlets have reported that investigations in the United States revealed alleged bribery involving the Adani Group amounting to approximately $250 million, placing India under heightened diplomatic pressure.

According to Bloomberg, the Adani Group has been facing investigations in the United States for more than a year over allegations of bribery and financial misconduct.

The report claimed that Prime Minister Modi made sustained efforts to shield Gautam Adani and his nephew from US summonses, but despite those efforts, the US Securities and Exchange Commission decided to proceed with legal action.

Bloomberg also noted that Hindenburg Research had previously accused the Adani Group of market manipulation, fraud, and corporate mismanagement.

The international publication indicated that the US cases could potentially expose the Adani Group to substantial financial penalties and possible prison sentences.

Meanwhile, Indian journalist Vinod Chand reported that following the issuance of direct summonses by the US Department of Justice, the Adani Group has intensified efforts to seek a settlement in the case.

He added that in legal circles, attempts at settlement are sometimes viewed as equivalent to an acknowledgment of wrongdoing.

Analysts say the developments have intensified scrutiny of the relationship between India’s political leadership and major corporate groups, at a time when New Delhi is seeking to project itself as a reliable global economic partner.
