Monsoon rains and floods claim 819 lives across Pakistan: WHO

As many as 819 people have lost their lives, while 1,111 individuals have been injured due to widespread flooding and rain-related incidents across Pakistan, says the World Health Organization (WHO) in its report released on Monday.

The WHO figures revealed a tragic demographic breakdown of the fatalities, with 493 men, 123 women, and 203 children among the deceased.

Similarly, among those injured, 546 are men and 295 are women, underscoring the widespread human toll of the disaster.

The monsoon season has also left a trail of destruction on the housing sector.

The WHO report confirmed that 8,658 homes have been damaged, including 2,070 completely destroyed and 6,588 partially damaged, leaving thousands of families displaced and vulnerable.

In addition to the human and material losses, the floods have severely affected the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

At least 104 health facilities were damaged during the monsoon and flood events, further complicating emergency response and access to medical services for affected populations.

The WHO report painted a grim picture of the disaster’s impact, warning that the loss of homes and health centers, combined with the high number of casualties, poses long-term challenges for Pakistan’s recovery.

It also stresses the urgent need for humanitarian support and coordinated efforts to address the crisis.
