Don’t prohibit AI, teach students to think beyond it.
The future must not need students who do not use AI, but it must need students who can think outside it. The very reason why an education system was created has never been to protect against the change of the future. However, its purpose is to equip them for it. The most recent field of conflict in educational institutions is with artificial intelligence. The controversial nature of ChatGPT and sister technologies is getting more controversial in universities. Others have countered this move by limiting or even banning AI, fearing that it promotes plagiarism and undermines student critical thought. Such worries are understandable. The questionable response is to prohibit AI, however. It is not necessary to teach students about the existence of AI, but what they need is to be taught how to use it in a responsible, ethical manner.
When a new technology comes, history repeats itself. In the past, students were criticised for using calculators because it was assumed it made the learner lazy. The internet was criticised for destroying research skills. Wikipedia was rejected as not reliable. However, not all of these inventions died out. Instead, education evolved. Teachers were taught to adapt, change assessments, and impartially teach students how to use these tools wisely.
Now, artificial intelligence deserves the same approach.
The truth of the matter is that the current generation of students will enter the workforce in a world where AI is becoming a common item. Lawyers use it to analyse legal documents. Physicians employ artificial intelligence-based systems as aids in diagnosis. It is utilised by businesses to analyse data, provide customer service and make decisions. Researchers are also starting to summarise literature and structure ideas with the help of AI.
By not accessing AI, universities may end up preparing graduates who will not have a place in a world that no longer exists. In addition to AI banning, several well-known universities, including the University of Oxford, Harvard University, and the University of Sydney, have subsequently proceeded with formulating transparent guidelines that promote transparency and responsible application of AI in learning and evaluation. They are not interested in whether students should use AI; rather, they aim to help them understand when, how, and why they should do so ethically.
Naturally, AI has the potential to be abused. Without needing to know what something is, students can get it to write articles or solve tasks. This is not a new issue, however. Even prior to ChatGPT, students were stealing books, finding plagiarised essays on the internet, or stealing work from their classmates. The technological landscape has transformed; not the ethical dilemma. Prohibiting a tool alone cannot ensure academic integrity. It is secured by inviting students to understand the importance of being honest.
In fact, complete prohibitions can create an even greater issue. Unless university policies tell students to stop using AI, students are unlikely to stop. Rather, they can operate it behind the scenes with no knowledge of its limitations and when its responses are inaccurate. Education is most effective when it promotes openness and not fear.
The better question is not "How do we stop students from using AI?" but "How do we teach them to use it well?"
Consider a classroom where the students have to contrast an AI-assisted answer with the academic literature, find its flaws, challenge its premises, and enhance its reasoning. The exercise builds much more critical thinking than just simulating that AI does not exist. Another lesson that universities need to learn is that AI is not flawless. It may make up references, misinterpret situations, show social prejudice against others, and provide confident but false information. Knowing how to oppose AI can be as significant as knowing how to use it.
That is why AI literacy ought to be included in universities. Some of the issues that students ought to learn include bias, privacy, copyright, transparency, and responsible citation. They need to understand when AI can help in the learning process, and when they need to exercise their independent judgement.
However, it is not the students who should be held responsible. Universities have to re-examine how they measure learning. If an assignment could be done completely by AI, it might be a problem not with the tech but also the grading. The increased focus on discussions, presentations, reflective writing, project-based learning, and research processes can promote a sense of true knowledge and make AI adoption transparent and ethical without any concern.
Pakistan has a chance of being ahead of the pack instead of behind. The development of artificial intelligence is changing education, industry, and society at an astounding rate. As it stands, neglecting it will not cause that transformation to slow. It will just increase the disparity between classroom and post-graduation learning students will encounter. The same can be said of the employment landscape. Future of Jobs Report 2025 by the World Economic Forum lists the following as the most desirable skills of the future labour force: AI literacy, technological adequacy, and analytical skills. Employers are increasingly seeking graduates who can work alongside AI, applying critical judgement, creativity, and ethical reasoning.
Traditionalism vs innovation has never been the case with education. It has not always been without helping people to find their way through it wisely. AI is just another part of that story. It is not becoming what it used to be; universities have always equipped students with a view to the world they are going to. Artificial intelligence does not supplant learning but entails a fresh commencing that necessitates improved pedagogy, enhanced morals and critical reasoning. The future does not require graduates who can merely evade AI. It requires graduates who can tell when to have faith in it, when to doubt, and when to outthink it.
