The Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) has allowed Maria, who entered into a marriage of her own choice, to go with her husband, while directing her parents to approach the relevant legal forum if they wished to challenge the marriage on grounds of alleged forgery.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, a two-member FCC bench headed by Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi heard the case on Tuesday.

During the hearing, Maria told the court that she had not been abducted and that she was an adult.

Ms Maria stated that she had married Shehryar of her own free will six months ago and had embraced Islam before the marriage.

She further informed the court that she had also recorded her statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code before a magistrate.

Counsel for the parents argued that the marriage of a minor girl was legally invalid, claiming that the girl was only 12 years old.

In response, Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi remarked that the girl did not appear to be 12 years of age, adding that the birth certificate and B-form had been obtained after a delay of 10 years.

The judge observed that the girl had clearly stated that she was not abducted and had described herself as an adult, noting that six months had already passed since her marriage.

Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi also observed that the girl (Maia) had accepted Islam before contracting the marriage.

Subsequently, the Federal Constitutional Court disposed of the case relating to the marriage of choice.
