NA spokesperson clarifies speaker’s salary hike process

The National Assembly Secretariat has issued a clarification regarding the recent controversy surrounding the increase in the salary of the Speaker of the National Assembly, distancing the Speaker’s office from the move, reported 24NewsHD TV Thursday.

According to a spokesperson of the National Assembly, the summary for the salary hike was prepared by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and not by the Speaker’s office or the National Assembly Secretariat. The spokesperson emphasised that the Secretariat had no role in initiating or processing the proposal.

“The summary regarding the salary increase was sent by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and subsequently approved by the federal cabinet,” the spokesperson clarified. Following the cabinet's approval, the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs issued the official notification.

The clarification comes amid public criticism and debate over the pay raise, with the National Assembly Secretariat aiming to make it clear that the entire process was handled through the proper executive channels.
