Severe fog disrupts traffic and flight operations in Punjab

Severe fog has engulfed large parts of Punjab, disrupting flight operations and forcing authorities to temporarily close several major motorways to ensure public safety, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday.

According to a spokesperson for the Central Region Motorway Police, the M-1 motorway has been closed for all traffic from Peshawar to Rashakai, while the M-3 has been shut from Faizpur to Darkhana.

The M-4 remains closed between Pindi Bhattian and Sher Shah, and the M-5 from Rohri to Sher Shah.

In addition, the M-11 linking Lahore with Sambrial and the M-14 from Kot Balian to Isa Khel have also been closed due to extremely low visibility.

The motorway closures led to long queues of vehicles in Lahore and other parts of Punjab, particularly at major interchanges such as Babu Sabu, causing inconvenience to commuters.

Officials said the precautionary closures were essential to protect lives and prevent serious road accidents amid dangerously reduced visibility.

Motorists have been advised to strictly follow lane discipline and to plan travel during daylight hours, with authorities identifying 10am to 6pm as the safest window for travel under foggy conditions.

Drivers were also urged to use fog lights, maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead, avoid overspeeding, and refrain from unnecessary travel.

Road users requiring assistance have been advised to contact the motorway police helpline at 130.

Authorities said conditions are being closely monitored and that the affected motorways will be reopened once visibility improves and travel is deemed safe.
