Another life lost to Naegleria in Karachi; death toll rises to two this year

A 23-year-old man from Orangi Town has become the second fatal victim of Naegleria fowleri in Karachi this year, health department officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The young man began showing symptoms of the deadly brain-eating amoeba on May 28 and succumbed to the infection after being under treatment at a private hospital.

With this tragic death, the toll for Naegleria-related fatalities in 2025 has risen to two in the city. The amoeba, commonly found in warm freshwater bodies and poorly chlorinated water tanks, enters the body through the nose and rapidly attacks the brain.

Medical experts have urged citizens to take strict precautions, especially during the summer months. "Increase the level of chlorine in domestic water tanks and be cautious while pouring water into the nose during swimming or bathing," they advised.
