Amazon Web Services to invest $8.2 billion in India

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud services arm of Amazon, will invest approximately $8.2 billion in the Indian state of Maharashtra over the next few years, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology announced on Monday.

India is increasingly focusing on expanding local cloud data storage. According to a report by International Data Corporation, the country's cloud services market, valued at $8.3 billion in 2023, is projected to grow to $24.2 billion by 2028.

Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that along with this investment, there would be significant growth in employment, with the investments expected to roll out by 2029-2030.

As part of the investment, Amazon will deploy its own graphics processing units (GPUs), cutting-edge technologies, and cloud management services in India, Vaishnaw added.

Amazon currently operates two data centers in the Indian subcontinent: one in Mumbai, which was launched in 2016, and another in Hyderabad, which began operations in 2022.

Last year, Amazon also announced plans to invest an additional $2 billion in India to expand its e-commerce business.
