The US State Department has termed the arrest of former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan as Pakistan’s internal matter, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.

In a statement, the spokesperson of US State Department said, “"The cases against Imran Khan and other politicians in Pakistan are an internal matter. We call for the respect of democratic principles and the rule of law in Pakistan, as we do around the world."

Former premier Imran Khan has hired lobby firms in America to improve its party image after he had accused the US of involving in a plot to overthrow his government last year. However, the US lawmakers who called upon the Biden administration to ask Pakistan to respect human rights and stop crackdown on the PTI, they are still silent on Imran’s arrest.

On May 26, one of the influential American legislators Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Senator Bob Menendez voiced concerns regarding the treatment meted out to leaders, workers and supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after their arrests in the wake of the May 9 vandalism. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee also spoke in support of former premier.

But so far, the US lawmakers have not given any statement on former prime minister’s arrest. -
