Pakistani-origin taxi driver hailed as hero for stopping car attack in Germany

The mayor of Mannheim, Germany, has praised a Pakistani-origin taxi driver for his bravery in stopping a deadly car attack that claimed two lives.

According to German media outlet DW, the taxi driver played a crucial role in preventing further casualties by chasing down the attacker's vehicle and forcing it to a stop. Mayor Christian Specht commended his actions, stating, "He showed great courage. He pursued the attacker's car and stopped it to prevent further harm."

The Pakistani taxi driver, Afzal Muhammad, who has been living in Germany for 15 years, is now being recognized for his heroic intervention.

Authorities confirmed that the attacker, a 40-year-old German citizen, attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended shortly after. During his escape, he attempted suicide by shooting himself in the mouth, but survived and was taken to the hospital. After receiving medical attention, he was handed over to law enforcement.

Investigators believe the suspect suffers from psychological issues, prompting further evaluations. Authorities have seized multiple items from his house and vehicle, including guns, documents, and digital storage devices, which are now undergoing forensic analysis.

The incident has sparked widespread discussions about public safety and mental health concerns, while the Pakistani taxi driver’s heroic efforts continue to receive praise from the community and officials alike.
