Cricket Australia introduces baseball-inspired rule for Big Bash League
Fans allowed to keep balls hit into stands during first over of each innings
In a unique and fan-friendly initiative, Cricket Australia has announced the introduction of a popular American baseball tradition into the upcoming season of the Big Bash League (BBL).
According to Cricket Australia, spectators attending BBL matches will now be allowed to keep the ball if it is hit into the stands during the first over of each innings, whether the ball crosses the boundary directly or after a bounce.
The new rule, which applies only to the first over of every innings, will allow fans to retain the ball as a souvenir, rather than returning it to officials.
Cricket Australia revealed that the initiative has been introduced in collaboration with a local bank, which became an official partner of the board earlier this year in July.
The rule will be implemented in both the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and the Men’s Big Bash League (BBL).
As per last season’s statistics, in the Men’s BBL, a ball reached the crowd once every two matches during the first over, while in the Women’s BBL, this occurred approximately once every ten matches.
Officials said the move aims to make the game “more engaging and exciting” for fans, offering them a tangible connection to memorable moments on the field.
The Women’s Big Bash League will begin on November 9, followed by the Men’s Big Bash League, which starts on December 14.
