Punjab Police Order 2025 amended to curb violent protests
Now people involved in riots may face up to 10 years in prison along with fine up to Rs500,000
Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider on Thursday approved the Punjab Police Order 2025 Amendment Bill, paving the way for its formal implementation across the province.
Following the governor’s approval, the amended law has come into force with immediate effect. According to the text of the bill, strict punishments have been introduced to curb violent protests and riots. Individuals found involved in riots will now face up to 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine of up to Rs500,000.
Under the amended provisions, the actions of violent mobs have been declared police-cognizable offences, while the crimes have been categorized as non-bailable. This means law enforcement agencies can take immediate action without prior court permission, and accused individuals will not be entitled to bail as a matter of right.
The amendment also brings a significant change in the judicial process, as cases related to violent protests will now be tried in sessions courts to ensure faster and more effective legal proceedings.
Officials say the amendment aims to strengthen law enforcement, maintain public order, and deter violence during protests, while ensuring that those involved in riots are dealt with strictly under the law.
