Five-member committee formed to probe Lyari building collapse

The Sindh government has formed a five-member inquiry committee to investigate the tragic building collapse in Lyari that left 27 people dead, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.

According to the channel report, Commissioner Karachi, Hassan Naqvi, has been appointed as the chairman of the committee. Other members include Special Secretary of Local Government Ayesha Hameed, Nadeem Ahmed, Asif Ali Langa, and additional officials.

According to the official notification, the committee will determine the reasons behind the collapse, recommend measures to prevent such incidents in the future, and identify those responsible for the negligence.

This announcement follows the Sindh government’s declaration yesterday of financial compensation of one million rupees per victim to the families of the deceased.

Senior Minister Sindh Sharjeel Memon assured that the government stands firmly with the victims’ families during this time of grief and vowed that those responsible will face strict legal consequences.

Provincial Minister Saeed Ghani emphasised that a fact-finding committee would submit its findings within two days and said FIRs would be filed against all negligent parties. He added that the government is moving toward implementing stricter building control laws and urged citizens to verify the No Objection Certificate (NOC) before purchasing any property.

According to a report aired Monday, the builder and contractor of the collapsed seven-storey structure in Lyari’s Agra Taj Colony remain at large. Builder Mansoor Shah has reportedly fled his home and switched off his phone. Police teams are conducting raids to arrest him.

An FIR has been filed at Kalri Police Station based on a complaint by SBCA Lyari Assistant Director Zafar Iqbal, accusing Mansoor Shah of using substandard construction materials.

Yesterday, rescue teams wrapped up a three-day search operation, recovering all 27 bodies trapped under the debris. District official Javed Nabi Khoso confirmed the end of the search operation and the final death toll.
