Human Rights Watch declares school attack in Iran a war crime

Human Rights Watch has called for an urgent investigation into the bombing of a girls’ school in Iran, describing the attack as a possible war crime and urging that those responsible be brought to justice, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.

According to the report, in a statement, the international rights organisation said the strike on a girls’ primary school constituted an unlawful attack on a civilian facility and demanded that those responsible face prosecution under international law.

Human Rights Watch said a comprehensive and independent investigation should be launched immediately to determine the circumstances of the incident and establish accountability for what it described as a brutal assault.

According to reports, about 160 schoolgirls were killed when the primary school was hit during bombing carried out amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel.

The organisation said attacks on schools and other civilian institutions during armed conflict violate international humanitarian law and emphasised that those responsible for such actions must be held accountable.
