Beth Mooney’s heroics lift Australia to victory after spin scare against Pakistan in ICC Women's World Cup

Australia overcame a dramatic top-order collapse to secure another victory in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, defeating Pakistan by 108 runs in a gripping encounter, 24NewsHD TV reported on Wednesday. 

After being reduced to 76 for seven on a turning pitch, the defending champions staged a remarkable recovery, courtesy of Beth Mooney’s unbeaten century and a crucial late partnership with Alana King.

Opting to bowl first, Pakistan captain Fatima Sana led from the front with a masterful display of spin bowling, claiming key wickets and dismantling Australia’s formidable top order.

Alyssa Healy, Tahlia McGrath, and Ellyse Perry all fell cheaply as Pakistan’s spinners tightened their grip on the match.

 At one stage, Australia appeared on the brink of a rare collapse, but Mooney held firm, showcasing her class and temperament.

With the scoreboard reading a precarious 118 for nine, Mooney found a reliable ally in Alana King.

The pair stitched together a vital 106-run stand for the last wicket, rescuing Australia from disaster and guiding the total to a competitive 221 for nine.

 Mooney’s unbeaten 109, crafted with patience and precision, proved to be the defining knock of the match, while King’s supportive contribution added the much-needed stability.

Nashra Sandhu was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Fatima Sana and Rameen Shamim took two apiece.

In reply, Pakistan’s batting lineup faltered under the pressure of a disciplined Australian bowling attack.

Despite a steady start, wickets tumbled regularly as Australia’s spinners returned the favor on the same turning surface.

None of Pakistan’s batters managed to convert starts into substantial scores, and the team eventually stumbled to 113 for nine, handing Australia yet another commanding victory.

Pakistan team was eventually bowled out for 114 in the 37th over, with Kim Garth leading Australia’s bowling attack by taking three wickets.
