James Cameron confirms ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ will be longer than ‘The Way of Water’

Director James Cameron has revealed that the upcoming instalment in the Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will have a longer runtime than its predecessor, The Way of Water.

The Academy Award-winning filmmaker explained that his team had developed too much material while working on Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. Rather than cutting essential content, they decided to carry it forward into Fire and Ash.

"In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2," Cameron shared.

"The film was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’ Movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2."

For context, The Way of Water had a runtime of three hours and 12 minutes, making Fire and Ash one of the longest films in the franchise.

Cameron first revealed the film’s title at the D23 Expo in August 2024, hinting at a visually rich and emotionally intense journey.

"You’ll see a lot more of Pandora that you never saw before," he teased.

"It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love."

Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
