Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to introduce a new verification system of face-scanning along with biometric to prevent the use of illegal mobile SIMs.

According to the 24News HD TV channel, the PTA had started work on a pilot project for a new mobile SIM verification system to confirm the identity of the buyer.

The PTA said the face-scanning of the sellers of the mobile SIM would also be required as some of the staff members of the mobile companies were also involved in illegal SIMs business.

The PTA disclosed that a fake silicone thump impression was being used to issue illegal SIM that was used for terrorism and other purposes later.

The PTA said they had fined worth of Rs23.5 million to three franchises of mobile companies and more than 526,000 illegal SIMs were blocked in the last three years.

The PTA said more than 360,000 identity cards were blacklisted for issuing illegal SIMs and 52 mobile franchises involved in illegal SIMs business shut down.

It further said that 2,926 retailers and 21 franchisees were evacuated and 21 employees of different franchises centres were suspended while 29 cases have been referred to the FIA.
