Selena Gomez takes a page from Taylor Swift’s playbook, hints at re-recording her hit ‘Who Says’

Selena Gomez is channelling her best friend Taylor Swift’s famous “re-record” era as she considers giving one of her most beloved songs a fresh new take.

The 33-year-old singer and actress revealed on the latest episode of Therapuss with Jake Shane that she’s seriously thinking about revisiting Who Says, the 2011 empowerment anthem she recorded with her former band, Selena Gomez & The Scene.

Reflecting on the track, Gomez admitted she got emotional recently when she heard it on the radio while traveling abroad. “I was like, ‘Why the f*** am I tearing up to my own song?’ But it was because it was the little me who was there saying these really powerful messages that I still need to hear,” she shared.

Originally released as the lead single from When the Sun Goes Down, the song has remained one of Gomez’s most cherished works. “It’s the most powerful moment when I get to perform it,” she said, adding that it’s one of the few reasons she would even consider going on tour again.

However, Gomez feels the track could use an update. “I need to redo it. I should recut it,” she confessed. “I sound young on the original. I would have to take it down an octave from each year I’ve sung it.”

Her willingness to re-record echoes Swift’s headline-making Taylor’s Version releases, in which the pop icon reclaimed her music by re-recording past albums. Gomez and Swift’s friendship spans more than 16 years, beginning when both were dating Jonas Brothers members. Following their breakups, they bonded over heartbreak, which Gomez calls “the best thing” that came out of that time.

During the podcast, Gomez also reminisced about an “incredible” unreleased song Swift played for her before anyone else heard it, a testament to their enduring closeness.

While Gomez has not toured since 2016, her attachment to Who Says remains strong. “You know, it wasn’t necessarily about body issues or societal standards back then, but now when you hear those words, they mean a lot more,” she explained.

Though she stopped short of confirming a timeline, Gomez left the door open. When host Jake Shane encouraged her to re-record the track, she smiled: “I’m so going to do that… Well, we’ll think about it. We’ll see what happens.”
