Rajpal Yadav gets jail term in 9-crore cheque bounce cases

Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has been given three months jail term in each of seven cheque bounce cases after the Delhi High Court upheld an earlier court order in a long-running loan dispute.

The case began in 2010 when Rajpal Yadav and his wife reportedly took a loan of ₹5 crore from a Delhi businessman to produce his directorial debut film, Ata Pata Laapata.

The film did not perform well at the box office and the loan was not repaid. Cheques issued to the lender later bounced, leading to multiple legal cases. With interest and other charges, the outstanding amount is said to have increased to around ₹9 crore.

The High Court rejected Yadav's appeal and upheld the sentence. It also ordered him to pay ₹1.05 crore as compensation to the complainant in each of the seven cases. Rajpal Yadav is one of Bollywood's best-known comedy actors. He has entertained audiences for years with roles in hit films such as Hungama, Chup Chup Ke, Phir Hera Pheri, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Partner and the Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise.
