Peshawar Zalmi announces Rs50m for Pakistani pilots who ripped through Indian air defence

Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Peshawar Zalmi has pledged Rs50 million in support of Pakistani pilots, recognizing their “heroic response” to recent missile and drone strikes by India.

The announcement was made on Sunday, as the country observed a “Day of Gratitude” declared by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to acknowledge Pakistan’s military response to the cross-border aggression.

The strikes, which occurred on Wednesday, targeted several Pakistani cities. In response, Pakistan claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets—an account partially confirmed by Indian government sources who acknowledged the loss of at least three aircraft.

Javed Afridi, chairman of Peshawar Zalmi, emphasized the severity of the threat to national security and praised the swift and precise action of Pakistan’s air defense forces, which helped prevent large-scale damage.

“Their unwavering courage, dedication, and sacrifice are the heartbeat of our national pride,” said Afridi. “This contribution is more than a gesture — it is a symbol of deep respect and solidarity with the heroes who defend our skies with unwavering resolve.”

The pledge came as a U.S.-brokered ceasefire appeared to hold on Sunday, following four days of intense conflict—the deadliest between the nuclear-armed neighbors since the 1999 Kargil War. Nearly 60 people were killed, and thousands displaced amid the hostilities.

As a result of the escalation, both India and Pakistan postponed their domestic Twenty20 cricket leagues to ensure the safety of players and fans. Cricket authorities in both countries are currently in talks to reschedule the remaining matches.
