A week after Meghan Markle’s surprise appearance at Paris Fashion Week, friends and sources close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly stunned and divided over her decision to attend the high-profile event in the French capital.

For Meghan, it was a public relations triumph. The Duchess of Sussex landed on Vogue’s Best Dressed List and received warm praise from none other than Anna Wintour, the famously reserved editor-in-chief of Vogue, who greeted Meghan with a kiss.

Meghan also shared a friendly embrace with Pierpaolo Piccioli, Balenciaga’s new creative director, marking a double win in the world of haute couture.

But for many within royal and close social circles, the trip raised eyebrows for a more personal reason.

Meghan’s glamorous return to Paris came despite Prince Harry’s long-held reluctance to visit the city due to its painful connection with his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car crash at the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in 1997.

The controversy deepened when Meghan shared a video on Instagram showing her car driving past the same bridge where Diana lost her life.

In the clip, she was seen lifting her Balenciaga heels onto the seat opposite her,  a moment observers found “insensitive beyond belief.”

According to a well-placed source, “Harry has always said no to Paris because of his mother. Meghan knew that. For her to film that video there — it’s shocking.”

Despite the backlash, Meghan’s team insists her Paris visit was purely professional.

A spokesperson told People magazine that the Duchess attended the Balenciaga show out of admiration for Piccioli, adding that she “has long respected his craftsmanship and modern elegance.”

Her recent appearance also comes at a time when Meghan’s lifestyle brand, “As Ever”, is struggling to gain traction.

Despite her efforts to project a polished image as a “modern homemaker,” the brand’s focus on artisanal jam and tea hasn’t made a major market impact. Insiders suggest the Duchess is considering pivoting toward fashion and beauty, areas she hinted at in an earlier Bloomberg interview.

Meanwhile, her relationship with Prince Harry appears strained. The couple was seen together in New York shortly after Paris, where they accepted the “Humanitarians of the Year” award at the Project Healthy Minds gala. Meghan appeared affectionate, but Harry looked visibly tense, offering only tight smiles during their joint appearance.

Sources suggest that while Meghan continues to pursue her career and business ambitions, Harry remains emotionally distant. “They want different things,” a friend revealed. “There are times when it’s really not great between them.”
