Interior Ministry declares increasing internet users a cybercrime threat

The Ministry of Interior has declared the speedily growing number of internet users in Pakistan a growing threat of cybercrime.
According to the 24News HD TV channel, the Ministry of Interior submitted a written reply to the National Assembly (NA) on Monday in which it presented the details of the complaints and punishments registered in the last 3 years regarding cybercrime.
The interior ministry described in its written reply in NA that Pakistan has 194 million cellular subscribers and there are 124 million broadband users and 121 million 3G and 4G users in the country.
Declaring the growing number of internet users a growing threat, the interior ministry said that due to the increasing teledensity, the number of cybercrime complaints has also increased.
The interior ministry added that in 2019, 30,209 complaints were received regarding cybercrime that was 1,18,011 complaints in 2020 while in 2021, 1,02,772 complaints were received.
In 2022, the interior ministry said 1,07,493 complaints of cybercrime were received, the ministry said.
Federal Interior Ministry also informed the NA that in the last three years, 3,060 FIRs have been registered on cybercrime while 124 people have been convicted of cybercrime in this period.
