Rizwan’s forced retirement backfires for Renegades
Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan was unexpectedly retired out in a rare and surprising moment during a match of the Big Bash League between the Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder on Monday.
Rizwan was called back to the dugout on the final ball of the 18th over, a decision that appeared purely tactical rather than injury-related.
With no visible sign of discomfort, the move stunned viewers as the set batter walked off mid-innings.
Before retiring out, Rizwan scored 26 runs off 23 balls, including two fours and one six—notably his only six of the tournament so far.
The Renegades management seemingly opted to inject more firepower into the closing overs, sending in Will Sutherland in his place.
However, the decision backfired instantly.
Sutherland faced just one delivery, managed a single, and was run out dramatically after the ball deflected off Daniel Sams’ fingertips and crashed into the stumps, leaving him well short of his crease.
Earlier, Rizwan had walked in at No. 4 after a strong start by the top order, with the Renegades cruising at 83/2 in 9.1 overs at the Sydney Showground Stadium, a venue known for high-scoring encounters.
But as the innings progressed, Rizwan struggled to maintain momentum when a push toward a 180-plus total was required.
The turning point came at the end of the 17th over when Hassan Khan was dropped at long-on by Cameron Bancroft, prompting skipper Will Sutherland to make the bold call to retire Rizwan out in search of late-innings acceleration.
The Melbourne Renegades eventually finished on 170 for 8, a total that fell short of expectations after a promising start, leaving the retire-out decision a major talking point of the match.
