Security sources said that Field Marshal Asim Munir closely monitored the operation at all times, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Wednesday.
According to security sources, Field Marshal Asim Munir instructed the security forces conducting the operation that the teachers and students are a precious national asset and must be protected at all costs.
Colonel Muhammad Tahir, the operation commander who led the mission that foiled the attack by Afghan militants on Cadet College Wana, stated that on November 10, five Afghan extremists launched an assault on the college.
He said Cadet College Wana is a valuable gift from the Pakistan Army to the people of South Waziristan, and the militants had attempted to target this symbol of education and development to demoralise the nation.
Colonel Tahir explained that one suicide attacker detonated himself while the other militants tried to storm through the main gate and attempted to take students hostage.
The army officer added that the prompt and decisive action of the security forces thwarted both the attack and the terrorists’ malicious objectives.
“We confined the terrorists to a specific block to ensure the safety of the students,” Colonel Tahir said. “Between 10 and 10:30 pm yesterday, following a full-scale operation, all the militants were eliminated.”
The rescued teachers and cadets of Cadet College Wana remained in high spirits, vowing to stand as an unbreakable wall against terrorism.
The rescued cadets praised the courage and dedication of the army personnel, saying that Pakistan Army soldiers stood as a shield between them and the militants for more than 24 hours.
One cadet recalled that they were preparing for a drill competition at sunset when the suicide explosion occurred. “We knew right away that the attackers were enemies of education who wanted to stop us from learning,” he said.
Another cadet said the soldiers swiftly evacuated them from the college to a secure location. “No matter what these enemies of education do, they cannot stop us from learning,” he declared.
A teacher at the college added that during the blast, all cadets were participating in drill practice. “We told the students to remain calm, as the Pakistan Army had arrived. Their timely action turned what could have been a tragic terrorist incident into a complete failure,” he said.
