Shrek 5 release delayed to 2027

Shrek and Donkey are taking a little longer to return to the big screen. DreamWorks Animation has pushed back the release of Shrek 5 by six months, moving it from December 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027.

The delay, first reported by Variety, has sparked speculation among fans, many of whom believe they already “know why” the highly anticipated sequel has been stalled.

“We all know why,” one Instagram user wrote, while another bluntly added: “Fix that animation.”

The backlash stems from the film’s teaser trailer, which was met with criticism earlier this year. Eagle-eyed viewers claimed Shrek’s design looked noticeably different, accusing the studio of giving the beloved ogre an unnecessary makeover,  including “rhinoplasty, lip filler, cheek implants, and a jaw shave.”

“Hopefully this means they’re changing the character design,” one fan commented, with another urging: “Take your time, DreamWorks. Take your time.”

Others voiced hope that the extra months would also improve the film’s script and overall look. “Good! Hope that means they’re fixing the animation and writing,” wrote one user.

While the studio hasn’t officially explained the reason for the delay, Deadline reported that the shift was partly due to the summer being considered a “better” release window.

The upcoming Shrek 5 will mark the first new instalment in the main series since 2010’s Shrek Forever After.

The original Shrek films, which combined irreverent humour, fairy tale twists, and groundbreaking animation,  remain one of DreamWorks’ most successful franchises, grossing billions worldwide and spawning the equally popular Puss in Boots spinoff series.
