'Why is it anti-Islamic?' Ahsan Khan challenges mindset around women's independence
TV star Ahsan Khan has questioned society's mindset that labels women’s independence as “anti-Islamic”.
Ahsan, with a surprised but questioning expression said he was very shocked by the criticism he faced for supporting women’s education, careers and independence.
Ahsan believes supporting women’s empowerment is compatible with Islamic teachings and pointed towards examples of influential women in Islamic history and in the country.
The Aap Ki Izzat star also questioned why a woman choosing to become educated or financially independent, or a husband supporting his wife’s career, should be viewed negatively.
“When these women stepped out, did they do anything wrong? No, they did not. So why should it be considered anti-Islamic? We need to change the mindset around women and understand that their independence, education and choices should not automatically be viewed negatively.” Ahsan said.
He explained that the mindset surrounding women’s independence needs to change at a societal level from beginning with the way families raise and educate their children.
According to Ahsan, the real change needs to begin within families, as children often learn their understanding of gender role by watching how their mothers specially are treated at home.
