NDMA reviews KP monsoon preparedness

The National Disaster Management Authority and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government reviewed preparations for the 2026 monsoon season, focusing on flood risks, landslides, glacial lake outburst floods and emergency response arrangements, reported 24NewsHd TV channel Monday.

Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr Musadik Malik chaired the meeting, which was attended by the NDMA chairman, the director general of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and officials from relevant departments.

PDMA officials briefed participants on the province’s monsoon preparedness, emergency planning and the availability of personnel, equipment and other resources.

The meeting reviewed measures to deal with urban flooding, riverine floods, landslides and possible flooding caused by glacial lake outbursts in vulnerable areas of the province.

Officials also discussed coordination among federal, provincial and district authorities and the need for timely sharing of weather forecasts and risk alerts.

Malik directed all relevant agencies to remain on alert during the monsoon season and ensure that emergency response arrangements were in place in high-risk districts.

He called for stronger communication and coordination at the district and union council levels to ensure that warnings and emergency instructions reached vulnerable communities without delay.

The minister also stressed the need to improve public awareness of monsoon-related hazards, evacuation procedures and precautionary measures.

The meeting discussed steps to promote safe tourism and travel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the monsoon, particularly in mountainous and flood-prone areas.

Officials were directed to ensure that tourists and local residents received timely information about weather conditions, road closures, landslide risks and other potential hazards.

The participants agreed that public awareness campaigns should be intensified through television, radio, social media and local administrative networks.

Authorities were also asked to maintain close coordination with rescue agencies, district administrations and other departments to ensure a prompt response in the event of floods, landslides or other emergencies.

The meeting stressed the need for continuous monitoring of vulnerable areas and timely deployment of resources to minimise loss of life and property during the monsoon season.
